Best mattress UK
For most people I would buy the Otty Original Hybrid. If price matters more than the brand name, the Origin Hybrid Pro gives you more mattress per pound than anything else sold in the UK.
I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.
The short answer
For most people in the UK I would buy the Otty Original Hybrid. It is well built, the spring count is real rather than marketing, and it costs meaningfully less than the brands you see advertised. If the price matters more than the name, the Origin Hybrid Pro gives you more mattress for less money than anything else I can find here, and the only reason it is not first is that Origin is a smaller company and the trial matters more when it is.

How I chose these, and what I weighted
Three things decided this list, in this order.
Construction against price. Depth, layer count, spring count and spring type, weighed against what else that money buys in the UK. A 25 cm hybrid with real pocket springs beats a 28 cm all-foam mattress at the same price for most sleepers, and depth alone tells you very little.
What owners report at the one and two year mark. First month reviews are close to useless in this category, because every new mattress feels good and nobody has discovered the problem yet. What matters is the complaint pattern once people have lived with it.
The terms, read properly. Trial length, what the guarantee actually requires, and who pays for collection. A ten year guarantee with a 25 mm sagging threshold and a base requirement is a weaker promise than a shorter one without conditions.
What I did not weight: awards, marketing claims, and commission. Two of the mattresses below pay me nothing, and the one I have put first pays less than several I have left out.
1. Otty Original Hybrid: the one most people should buy
Otty is the brand I find myself recommending most often and the one that gets the least attention relative to what it makes. The Original Hybrid is 25 cm, uses tall pocket springs rather than micro-springs, and sits at 7 out of 10 for firmness.
What it does well is the unglamorous part. The spring unit is genuine, the edges hold up far better than any all-foam mattress, and the build has been consistent for years rather than being quietly revised while keeping the name. At around 500 pounds it undercuts Simba's comparable model by a wide margin without a meaningful drop in construction.
The catch, and it is a real one: it is firm. Seven out of ten is honest, and it feels like it. This is the single most common complaint from UK owners and it is a mismatch problem rather than a quality problem. If you currently sleep on something soft and you order this because it reviews well, there is a genuine chance you will send it back.
Not for you if: you are a side sleeper under about 10 stone who likes to sink in. Look at the Otty Pure+ Hybrid 4000 instead, which is the softest in Otty's range at 5 out of 10.

2. Origin Hybrid Pro: more mattress per pound than anything else
Thirty-one centimetres, eight layers, up to 5,700 pocket springs across seven zones, from 374 pounds. Now compare that to Simba's Hybrid Pro: 28 cm, eight layers, up to 4,800 springs, from 899 pounds.
I have looked at this comparison repeatedly expecting to find the catch in the materials, and it is not there. The difference is that Simba spends heavily on marketing and retail distribution and Origin does not. That is a legitimate reason for a price gap and it is not a reason to pay it.
Origin also bundles free pillows with every mattress, which is worth more than it sounds when a decent pillow costs 60 pounds.
The catch: Origin Sleep UK is a smaller operation with no retail presence, so you cannot lie on one, and if the mattress is wrong you are relying entirely on the returns process. The Trustpilot record is reassuring, with over 2,300 reviews at 4.1, but it is not Emma's scale. The heavy award marketing on Origin's site also does the brand no favours: the specification speaks for itself and the badges make it look like it does not.
Not for you if: you want to try before you buy, or you are the sort of person who will worry about a returns process with a smaller company.

3. Otty Extra Firm Hybrid: the one genuine option for heavier sleepers
This is a gap in the UK market that almost nobody fills properly, and Otty fills it. The Extra Firm sits at 9 out of 10 and is sold specifically for sleepers over 15 stone.
The reason this matters is physics rather than preference. A 90 kg person exerts roughly twice the pressure per square centimetre on a mattress surface as a 55 kg person, and that additional load breaks down foam cells faster. The industry durability standard, ASTM F1566, uses a 75 kg test roller, so manufacturer lifespan claims do not translate to heavier sleepers at all. An all-foam mattress that lasts eight years for one person may develop problematic impressions in three to five for another.
Buying a firmer, spring-led mattress is not a comfort preference in that situation. It is the difference between a mattress lasting and a mattress failing.
Not for you if: you are under about 14 stone and simply like a firm bed. Nine out of ten is very firm and you will probably find it punishing rather than supportive.

4. Eve Wunderflip Premium Hybrid: if you genuinely do not know
Most brands answer firmness uncertainty with a trial period. Eve answers it with construction. The Wunderflip cover unzips so you can flip the top section, giving a medium side and a firm side in one mattress, over 2,500 pocket springs at 28 cm.
That is a better answer than a trial, because a trial means boxing a mattress back up and waiting for a collection, and flipping it means an evening's work. If you and a partner disagree about firmness, or you have never owned a mattress you actually liked, this solves a problem the rest of the category only manages.
The catch: it is expensive at 1,099 pounds, and Eve is not the company it was. It went into administration in 2022 and the brand is now owned by Bensons for Beds. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it does mean the Eve name carries weight it has not earned since then. Judge the product.
Not for you if: you already know what firmness you want. You are paying for adjustability you will never use.

5. Ergoflex 5G: memory foam by someone who has been doing it longest
If you specifically want memory foam rather than a hybrid, this is the one I would buy, and for a reason most reviews miss.
Ergoflex has been trading since 2006, which makes it the only mattress-in-a-box brand in the UK that has been in business longer than the ten year warranty it offers. Every other brand offering a ten year guarantee is offering a promise it has not yet had to keep for a full cycle. That is not a small distinction when the whole category has a durability problem.
The construction is 23 cm across five layers with 9 cm of high density visco-elastic foam over a 5 cm airflow layer and a 9 cm high resilience base. It holds a Which? Best Buy and carries one of the highest Trustpilot ratings in the sector.
The catch: 23 cm is shallow by current standards and the trial is 30 days, which is short in a market where 100 to 200 nights is normal. Thirty days is enough to know if you hate it and not enough to be confident.
Not for you if: you sleep hot. This is deep memory foam and no airflow layer fully solves that. Buy a hybrid.

6. Simba Hybrid Pro: if you are spending more
Twenty-eight centimetres, eight layers, up to 4,800 springs, a wool comfort layer and a second spring layer over the standard Hybrid. It is a properly made mattress and Simba's spring counts are real.
Simba also gave binding undertakings to the CMA in August 2024 committing that any "was" price must be a genuine previous selling price backed by sufficient sales volume, revised slightly in September 2026 and still in force. That makes its discounts smaller and more meaningful than most in this category, and it is worth knowing when you are comparing a 25 percent Simba discount against a 50 percent one elsewhere.
You can also lie on one, because Simba has been sold through Bensons for Beds stores since May 2025. For anyone uncertain about firmness that is worth more than any review.
The catch: at 899 pounds it is roughly two and a half times the Origin Hybrid Pro for less spring and less depth. You are paying for the brand, the retail presence and the marketing. Some of that is genuinely worth having.
Not for you if: you are buying on value. Origin and Otty both beat it on paper.

7. Nectar Classic Hybrid: on a tight budget
At 299 pounds this is the cheapest mattress on this list that I would put in a main bedroom, and the reason is the 365 night trial rather than the construction.
Twenty-five centimetres with micro-springs rather than full pocket springs is a modest build, and I would not pretend otherwise. What makes it a sensible purchase at this price is that you get a full year to decide, which covers a complete cycle of seasons and removes most of the risk from a budget purchase.
The catch: micro-springs sit inside the comfort layers and add responsiveness. They are not a support core. If you want the edge support and airflow people associate with hybrids, you need the Premier Hybrid at 549 pounds with encapsulated pocket springs, or one of the Otty models.
Not for you if: you are over about 15 stone. Go firmer and go sprung.

What I left out, and why
This is the section most buying guides do not write, and it tells you more than the picks do.
| Mattress | Why it is not here |
|---|---|
| Emma Original | An all-foam mattress at 369 pounds, competing against hybrids with real springs at similar money. The trial and the returns process are genuinely good. The mattress is average and the marketing is not. |
| Simba Hybrid Essential | Four layers at 20cm with up to 1,000 springs. Too thin to recommend at 549 pounds when Otty's Aura costs 200 pounds less. |
| Casper, any model | Casper withdrew from the UK in July 2020. Old stock still turns up through Amazon UK marketplace sellers, so you can buy one, but there is no UK trial, no manufacturer support here, and no guarantee worth claiming on. It still appears in current UK best-of lists, which tells you those lists are not being checked. |
| Leesa, any model | No longer sells in the UK from its own site. As with Casper, marketplace stock circulates on Amazon UK with none of the trial or support that makes a mattress purchase safe. |
| Silentnight Miracoil | Linked open coils transmit motion across the whole bed. For a couple this is the wrong purchase at almost any price. The Mirapocket range is a different matter. |
| Nectar Classic Memory Foam, 199 pounds | Cheap all-foam is where durability problems concentrate, and no brand in this category publishes foam density. Fine for a guest room, not for a bed used nightly. |
Who should not buy any of these
If you have a specific medical condition affecting your spine, joints or circulation, buy on advice from a physiotherapist or GP rather than from a list. General firmness advice is exactly that, and the right mattress for a diagnosed condition is a clinical question, not a shopping one.
If your existing mattress is under about four years old and has developed a dip, you may have a claim rather than a purchase. Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 sit with the retailer who sold it, not the manufacturer, and run up to six years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, five in Scotland, regardless of what any guarantee says. Check that before spending again.
A correction worth making
Commonly repeated, and wrong
The claim that a higher spring count means a better mattress is repeated across almost every UK mattress site, and it stops being true well before the numbers stop climbing. Beyond roughly 2,000 springs in a king size, manufacturers add springs by using thinner gauge wire in smaller units. You get more contact points and less individual support, and the difference you can actually feel diminishes quickly. A well-made 2,000 spring mattress with a good comfort layer will outperform a poorly made 5,000 every time. Spring count is a useful comparison between mattresses of similar construction and a meaningless one across different builds.
How to actually decide
Work through it in this order and you will get to the right answer faster than by reading more reviews.
- Weight first. Over 15 stone, go firm and go sprung. The Otty Extra Firm exists for this and there are few alternatives.
- Then sleeping position. Side sleepers need enough give at the shoulder and hip. Back and front sleepers need less. If you are a side sleeper, do not buy a 7 out of 10 mattress because it reviews well.
- Then heat. If you sleep hot, buy a hybrid. Deep memory foam traps heat and no cover fully fixes that, whatever the cooling technology is called.
- Then budget. Somewhere between 350 and 600 pounds buys a genuinely good mattress in the UK in 2026. Above that you are buying refinement. Below it you are buying a compromise.
- Check the trial last. Because the longer it is, the less the rest of this matters.
If you are still working out what you need, start with how to choose a mattress and confirm your size with the UK bed and mattress size guide.

Questions people ask
What is the best mattress in the UK?
For most people, the Otty Original Hybrid. It uses genuine tall pocket springs rather than micro-springs, the edges hold up far better than any all-foam mattress, and at around 500 pounds it undercuts comparable Simba models substantially. The caveat is that it is firm at 7 out of 10.
How much should I spend on a mattress in the UK?
Between 350 and 600 pounds buys a genuinely good mattress in 2026. Above that you are paying for refinement and brand. Below it you are accepting a compromise, usually in foam density or spring count, and that compromise tends to show up as sagging at year three.
Is a hybrid better than memory foam?
For most people, yes. Hybrids run cooler, have far better edge support, and last longer under heavier loads. Memory foam wins on one thing: motion isolation. If you sleep with a restless partner and that is your main problem, foam is the right answer.
Does a higher spring count mean a better mattress?
Not beyond a point. Past roughly 2,000 springs in a king size, manufacturers add springs using thinner gauge wire in smaller units, so you get more contact points and less individual support. A well-made 2,000 spring mattress beats a poorly made 5,000 every time.
